Loving Vincent – a film examining the life of Vincent van Gogh

After nearly 6 years in development, over 62,000 (62,450 to be exact) frames hand-painted by 115 professional oil painters, and integrating 94 of Van Gogh’s paintings into the animation, the full trailer for Loving Vincent had finally been released.

Written and directed by Dorota Kobiela & Hugh Welchman, and producers Hugh Welchman, Sean Bobbitt & Ivan Mactaggart via Poland’s BreakThru films & Britain’s Trademark films,

‘All the characters in Loving Vincent are performed by real actors either on specially constructed sets, designed to look like Vincent’s paintings, or against Green Screens with the Loving Vincent Design Paintings composited in through a live view system on the set.’

‘The live action material was then combined with Computer Animation for elements such as birds, horses, clouds and blowing leaves and composited together with the Design Paintings to create the Reference Material for the Painting Animation’.

Using the reference material as a basis for the first frame, animators recreated and animated Vincent’s paintings stroke for stroke, taking a digital still before moving onto the next frame artwork.

With a stellar cast including Aidan Turner (The Hobbit), Helen McCrory (Harry Potter, Skyfall-Bond), Douglas Booth (Noah, Jupiter Ascending and Romeo & Juliet), Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, The Lovely Bones) and Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), this film is sure to be a huge hit when it is released later this year.
